As with other rural agencies, we regularly encounter a shortage of nursing staff at our agency. There is a constant demand particularly for nursing home, cancer nursing, midwifery and theatre staff. We have been fortunate to attract appropriate skilled staff for our increased requirements in the accident & emergency department.
The table below shows a significant rise in staffing levels over the last few years. This is in part due to the employment of dedicated nursing staff for Accident & Emergency Department. During 2002/03 there was an increase in nursing particularly in theatre due to additional throughput, which has stabilized in 2005/06. Predominately however the past increases in nursing EFT have been due to additional nursing positions negotiated through the August 2000 Nurses EBA (Enterprise Bargaining Agreement). The additional staffing has been positive from the prospect of reduced workload for staff. The new Nurses EBA is expected to be ratified in October 2004. Remaining (non-nurse) positions have been relatively stable over the past twelve months.
